Becoming a Coach

YOUR GUIDE TO COACHING/ADVISING

FOUR STEPS TO GET A PUPIL-ACTIVITY PERMIT

1.  BCI/FBI BACKGROUND CHECK

Fingerprinting for state (BCI) and federal (FBI) background checks can be completed by the Westerville City Schools Office of Human Resources and should be your first step in becoming a coach. The cost is $60, cash or check. Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, please call (614) 797-5721 or email Jodi Knisley. (We may accept your current background check results if they are within one year old and were sent electronically to the Ohio Department of Education at the time of completion.) If you choose to use an outside agency, please have them use the following BCI and FBI Reason Codes and direct copy Ohio Department of Education.

  • BCI: 3319 39B1 (School Employees-non teaching positions)
  • 3319 39B2 (School Employees-teachers only)
  • FBI: 3319.39 (Public School District or Chartered Nonpublic School)

With continuous employment, the FBI is required every five years. If there is a break in service, you will be required to complete a new BCI and FBI background check.

2.  CPR - WITH HANDS ON SKILLS TRAINING

The CPR training course is offered by the American Heart Association at www.heart.org/en/cpr or American Red Cross at www.redcross.org/take a-class. OhioHealth provides CPR training free for Westerville City School coaches/directors, you must complete the in class/virtual class AND the hands on training to be certified completely. Visit OhioHealth HERE for location, date and registration information. The CPR certification course required for WCS PAP holders is one that includes hands-on skills training and issues a CPR card.

3.  COACHES’ TOOL CHEST

The cost of the license code for each coach/advisor/director, will be covered by the district. (This is typically $49 per code.) Reach out to your direct supervisor for your code to complete the Coaches’ Tool Chest Training Modules. The coaches and advisors that require a Pupil-activity permit (PAP) need to complete the training in the Coaches Tool Chest each year, even if their PAP isn't due for renewal. The program takes about 75-90 minutes to complete all of the sections which includes all of the training needed to renew a PAP. The CPR virtual lesson included will not count towards your CPR card. That class needs to be taken separately. For Coaches Tool Chest instructions and FAQs, click HERE

4.  APPLY FOR A PUPIL-ACTIVITY PERMIT

Pupil-activity permits are required for individuals who will direct, supervise or coach a student activity program that involves athletics, routine or regular physical activity or activities with health and safety considerations prior to working with students. For more information visit the Ohio Department of Education.
