Parent Guide for Student Success: Planning for present and future success

Ask your child:

  • What are some of your goals and aspirations academically, personally, and professionally?
  • What are your plans for after high school? (school, military, vocational training, work)
  • What courses (i.e. dual enrollment, advanced level), organizations, or extra-curricular activities are you taking or getting involved in that support your academic, personal, or professional goals and aspirations?
  • What kind of preparations are you making for the ACTs or SATs?
  • Do you know all of the timelines or deadlines for the ACTs or SATs?
  • What research into scholarships and / or internships have done so far?
  • What are your strategies for managing freedom, loneliness, and stress in a healthy, safe, and positive way?
  • What are some things I need to start doing, stop doing, or continue doing to support your present and future success?

Ask your child’s teacher(s) / counselors:

  • What are the areas of interest or courses that my child seems to shine / excel in?
  • What courses (i.e. dual enrollment, advanced level), or extra-curricular activities do you recommend my child get involved in that support their academic, personal, or professional goals and aspirations?
  • What scholarships or internships do you know of that support my child’s academic, personal, or professional goals and aspirations?
  • Where can my child and I research scholarship or internship opportunities?
  • What kind of preparations should my child be making for the ACTs or SATs?
  • What are the timelines or deadlines for the ACTs or SATs?
  • Is there anything you suggest I start doing, stop doing, or continue doing to support my child’s present and future success?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I know my child’s goals and aspirations?
  • Am I holding my child accountable for their academic, personal, and professional success?
  • Is my child enrolled in the right courses to be successful in the future?
  • Am I creating a home life that is conducive to my child’s academic, personal, and professional success?
  • Am I role modeling the attitudes and behaviors that reinforce my child’s academic, personal, and professional success?
  • Am I maintaining ongoing communication/engagement with my child’s school, teacher(s), and counselor?
  • Is there anything I need to start doing, stop doing, or continue doing to support my child’s present and future success?
