WNHS Young Feminist Club organizes formal footwear drive for peers
Westerville North High School’s Young Feminist Club is kicking off the school year with a project members say is focused on building a community that supports each other.
Through the group’s Formal Footwear Drive, students said they want to take the pressure off their peers who may not be able to afford dress shoes, help them shop sustainably and hope they feel included in their Warrior family.
“It’s a really important project,” senior and club member Trinity Cochran said. “Not everyone has the money to buy this.”
Fairy Goodmothers, a Columbus-based nonprofit that provides free prom dresses across Central Ohio, donated 200 formal shoes to the drive on Friday.
Club members launched the drive earlier this month. While they originally asked for heels and formal footwear, WNHS students have also donated dresses and jewelry as well. The group is still collecting donations through next week and will eventually display the clothing and shoes during lunch for students to choose from.
The club plans to host another formal footwear drive for prom.
