Walnut Springs sixth-graders blend art and math in ratio paintings project

Walnut Springs Middle School math teacher Maria Soisson launched her ratios lesson with her sixth-grade students with a painting project, giving them a real-life application of when ratios are used.

Soisson kicked off the lesson by reviewing the color wheel, demonstrating how to write a ratio using a combination of primary colors. Students then blended paint colors, tracking their work using ratios. This week, they created paintings using their own unique pallet of colors, cataloging the ratios of the blended colors.

Soisson has typically ended her ratio lessons with the painting project but opted to introduce the math topic with the activity this year. She plans to connect math problems they’ll explore in the lesson to students’ experiences blending colors for their paintings.
