Mark Twain fifth-grade teacher named Sunny 95’s Teacher of the Month for November

April Hynes, a fifth-grade teacher at Mark Twain Elementary, has been named the November Teacher of the Month by Sunny 95, WSNY (94.7 FM).

Andre Friederich, event director for the Columbus Radio Group and a radio personality on WVMX-Mix 107.9, along with Hynes’ students and Mark Twain staff, surprised Hynes with the news on Tuesday. Roosters, which serves as a sponsor of Sunny 95’s Teacher of the Month awards, provided lunch for Hynes and her class.

Walnut Springs Middle School sixth-grader Alice Schott, who was a student of Hynes’ class last year, nominated her for the award with the help of her mother, Cara. Both were on hand during Tuesday’s surprise.

“She inspired me in a lot of different ways,” Alice Schott said. “I didn’t think I could do math but she actually kind of taught me extra.”

She visits Hynes on Thursdays to help grade papers, tidy up her classroom and share updates of her life in middle school.

Cara Schott said the weekly visits have helped her daughter with her transition to middle school.

“It means everything to me,” she said.
