Mission Statement
Longfellow Elementary Magnet School provides students with a technology-rich learning environment in which they experience mathematics and science as an integral part of everyday life.
Background: Opened in 1931, it was the first public school in Westerville built specifically as an elementary school. Even today, Longfellow continues to receive recognition as one of Westerville's oldest and most well preserved schools. Since 1991, Longfellow has been a district elementary magnet school that serves students in grades one through five.
The focus of instruction at Longfellow involves mathematics and science. In March 1995, the school was named an Ohio Venture School and is involved in the Venture Capital Program. Grant funds will be utilized to establish an in-depth staff development program in technology. In May of 1995, the Longfellow and Battelle Memorial Institute partnership was designated as one of 56 of Ohio's BEST Practices. Cited for a program where teachers, principal, and parents collaborate to plan and implement year-long, hands-on teaching and learning activities; use practical applications of science, math and technology; and broaden students' understanding of future career choices.
In 2006, Longfellow was selected as a national Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. This honor was attained by having Ohio Achievement Test scores in the top 10 percent of all schools statewide. During the past 6 years Longfellow has received a school rating of Excellent given by the Ohio Department of Education on its building report card. This sustained academic achievement is a result, in large part, of our belief that all students can learn. |
