School Board Recognizes Student Inventors Moving on to National Competition

Program coordinators Susan Smucker and Lyndsey Manzo sit among student inventors who were honored by the Board of Education. 

 

 

 

Seventeen Westerville City Schools students have won coveted spots to attend and compete at the National Invention and Entrepreneurship Expo, which will be held in spring of 2019 at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, Michigan.  Winners were selected at the 2018 Ohio Invention Convention & Entrepreneurship Competition, which took place on Sunday, July 29, at the Ohio State Fair.  They were formally recognized Monday evening, October 8.  Lyndsey Manzo and Susan Smucker, Westerville educators who coordinated the district competition, presented the group to the Westerville City Schools Board of Education and Superintendent.  Westerville pupils moving on to the national contest are:

  • Kacee Bohan, Mark Twain Elementary School, McGraw Hill Education Award (Industry and Edison Award), Pencil Partner;
  • Avamarie Hedrick, Emerson Elementary School, Fourth Grade Second Place, The Slug Plug;
  • Jack Monahan and Zach Rogers, Heritage Middle School, the Honda Transportation/Financial Infrastructure Award (Industry and Edison Award), The Desk Express;
  • Savanna Hooker and Myla Manu-Arkhurst, Hanby Elementary School, McGraw Hill Education Award (Industry and Edison Award), The Speech Pro;
  • Grace Rutherford, Cherrington Elementary School, Fifth Grade Third Place, Double Bubble;
  • Devon Ford, Blendon Middle School, Eighth Grade First Place, the Chicken Boredom Board;
  • Dylan Gledhill, Robert Frost Elementary School, National Qualifier, grade level K-4, No Crust Brownies;
  • Reid Lattimer, Robert Frost Elementary School, National Qualifier, grade level K-4, Head Aid;
  • Jackson Kelley, Robert Frost Elementary School, National Qualifier, grade level K-4, Play Time;
  • Emily and Isabella Giannetto, Cherrington Elementary School, National Qualifier, grade level K-4, Bubble Wrap Bags;
  • Emily Boyd, Mark Twain Elementary School, National Qualifier, grade level 5-8, Dog Wrap;
  • Zachary Ottersbach, Walnut Springs Middle School, National Qualifier, grade level 5-8, 4:1 Baking Pan; and
  • Donovan Varney and Zoey Ward, Blendon Middle School, National Qualifier, grade level 5-8, Soapy Squeeze.
