Saturday mornings for elementary students present many exciting choices. On March 17, eighty-five Westerville children from Cherrington, Emerson, Hanby and Mark Twain elementary schools opted to play chess. In a tournament hosted by the Cherrington Elementary School Chess Club, youngsters filled the gymnasium to compete. Each pupil played in five rounds of chess and went home with either a medal for participation or a trophy, given to the top seven students in each division. In the K-3 Division, Cherrington took home first place. Emerson won the 4-5 Division.
Cherrington parents Robert and Rachel Dew organized the event. Cherrington Principal Andy Heck thanked the PTA and all the student and adult volunteers for their time and effort. He also praised participants for playing so hard, displaying good character and sportsmanship, and representing the community in such a positive way. “The day was a huge success and we look forward to future competitions,” he concluded.
