Commended Students Named in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program

Twelve pupils in the Westerville City School District have been named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.  They are:  Rachel Rios, Westerville Central High School; Bradley Davis, Tony Du, Jack Engelhart and Jacob Waldruff, Westerville North; and Sage Conger, Joshua Himes, Sarah Leonard, Nicholas Ruyack, Andrew Siedlak, Micah Thomas, and Nicholas Vermaaten, Westerville South.

Westerville School District Hosts Multitude of Foreign Exchange Students

For many years, Westerville City Schools has hosted foreign exchange students hailing from practically every part of the globe.  Cumulative records were not kept prior to the 2005-2006 school year, but since then, 106 foreign exchange students have walked the hallowed halls of Westerville high schools.  This year alone, 14 pupils from various places around the world are soaking up American culture and education.

ESL Parent Meeting Slated for October 21

“Setting and Measuring Goals for Success” is the theme of the next English as a Second Language (ESL) parent meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, October 21.  The event will take place in the Hawthorne Elementary School cafeteria from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and is open to all ESL families.

Rotary Club of Westerville Names October Students of the Month

The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, October 2.  October students are:  Kenna Pollard, Westerville Central High School; Carmen Stone, Westerville North High School; Sydney King, Westerville South High School; and Ali Baird, St. Francis DeSales High School.

Head-Start Preschool Students Sought for New Central College Location

The Child Development Council of Franklin County Inc. is now enrolling Head-Start preschool students for the 2014-15 school year at its new Westerville Central College location.  Head-Start is an early learning program for preschool aged children of families in poverty, designed to promote school readiness and meet each child’s emotional, social, health, nutritional and psychological needs.

Westerville Education Foundation Offering Sponsorships for “GAP Initiative” Website

“We’re offering local businesses a limited opportunity to become involved in this initiative by sponsoring our three new modules on the WEF website,” explained Fawaz Hamoui, chair of the WEF Development Committee.  “There are two sponsorship levels: Varsity and Junior Varsity. Only six Varsity sponsorships are available, while nine Junior Varsity sponsorships are available.”

Boots, BBQ and the Buckeyes!  Join Westerville Education Challenge on Saturday, November 8 at 6:00 p.m. for the party of the year and help bring the successful Challenge Day anti-bullying program to all Westerville City School freshmen.

Mid-States Band Association Invitational Nets Strong Results for Westerville South

Marching band season is fully underway in the Westerville City School District and throughout the country.  One of the latest contests took place on Saturday, October 4.  Chilly temperatures did not dampen the enthusiasm of performers at the Mid-States Band Association Invitational, held in Jim McCann Stadium at Westerville North High School.

Westerville Education Foundation Launches GAP Initiative to Support Innovative Educational Practices in Westerville City Schools

The Westerville Education Foundation (WEF) on September 30, 2014, launched its latest endeavor to support quality education in Westerville City Schools.  Officially known as the “GAP Initiative,” the WEF’s latest project puts the power of online fundraising and crowdsourcing directly into the hands of classroom teachers and other licensed educators.

Educators Gather to Learn from Westerville’s Successful EOS Program

After 14 years and more than 1,000 graduates, the Westerville City Schools Educational Options for Success (EOS) program had the distinct opportunity to host and offer assistance to other Ohio districts interested in developing or improving an alternative educational program.  On Friday, September 26, the Ohio Department of Education held a professional workshop at the Academic Enrichment Center for alternative education.  Administrators, teachers, and counselors from around Ohio came together to learn more about the award-winning success of Westerville’s EOS program, its history, programmatic strengths, and day-to-day operations.
