Westerville City Schools Launch Student Connections Initiative with Support from Westerville Education Foundation

At the Westerville Education Foundation’s (WEF) inaugural Celebration of Education, Innovation & Inspiration, held at the Everal Barn this morning, Westerville City Schools Superintendent Dr. John Kellogg announced a new district initiative called Student Connections.  The program will connect students to diverse literature, mentors and tutors, as well as create opportunities to engage and address issues surrounding students’ social and emotional needs. Students also will focus on creating pathways that connect them to careers and college opportunities, as well as increase their academic achievement.

Holocaust Survivor Sofiya Karpovich to Speak at ESL Parent Meeting

Holocaust survivor Sofiya Karpovich will speak about overcoming hardship and creating a happy life filled with love and success at an ESL Parent Meeting scheduled for Monday evening, May 4, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.  The event will take place at Blendon Middle School.

Families Pack Westerville North for Nationwide Children’s Starry Night

More than 1,100 people enjoyed the Nationwide Children’s Starry Night Family Learning Festival last Sunday.  Organized by the Westerville Partners for Education (WPE), this year’s event theme, “Movement,” brought together a variety of hands-on learning activities from protozoan motion to motors to sports medicine, dance, and more.  Local businesses and organizations generously offered exhibits and programs, including Westerville North Science students and the district’s Fab Lab.  Educators also enjoyed an “Educator Preview Hour,” connecting teachers with exhibitors to seed classroom collaboration.

School Board to Meet

Prior to the Regular Session of the Westerville City Schools Board of Education on Monday evening, April 27, the Board will vote to go into Executive Session at 3:30 p.m. for the purpose of discussing negotiations.  No action will be taken.  The Regular Session will begin at 6:00 p.m.  Both meetings will take place in the Early Learning Center, which is located at 936 Eastwind Drive in Westerville, Ohio.

Family Feedback about Career Advising Policy Requested

Ohio law requires all school districts to adopt a local policy on career advising by the 2015-16 school year. Through career advising, students gain an understanding of how their interests and strengths connect to their academic and career goals.  They also begin to understand how their personal interests, strengths and values might predict satisfaction and success in school and related career fields.

Twenty-four third grade children hailing from 15 different countries combined their talents, under the direction of teacher Kate Mantenieks and retired Ohio University Professor Dorothy Leal, to write Mighty Mustangs:  The History of Hawthorne Elementary.  The paperback is available for $7.99 on Amazon.

Schools Participate in Pajamas for Kids with Cancer Day

Every school day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer.  As one can imagine, cancer treatment is not a quick or easy process, and these children spend from weeks to months at a time in the hospital as they undergo chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and other procedures. They are often unable to attend school and participate in many childhood activities. For a large portion of time during their treatment, these youngsters are usually in their pajamas.

Hawthorne Puts On “Udderly” Amazing Show

On Thursday, March 26, first grade students at Hawthorne Elementary School brought the charm and fun of the farm to life in their barnyard musical entitled, “Old McIntyre Had a Farm.”  The children worked hard preparing for the show – learning the songs and choreography in music, creating farm drawings to decorate the school in art, and exploring the lyrics in their classroom reading blocks.
