Westerville City Schools Launch Student Connections Initiative with Support from Westerville Education Foundation

At the Westerville Education Foundation’s (WEF) inaugural Celebration of Education, Innovation & Inspiration, held at the Everal Barn this morning, Westerville City Schools Superintendent Dr. John Kellogg announced a new district initiative called Student Connections.  The program will connect students to diverse literature, mentors and tutors, as well as create opportunities to engage and address issues surrounding students’ social and emotional needs. Students also will focus on creating pathways that connect them to careers and college opportunities, as well as increase their academic achievement.

Westerville Education Foundation Mini-Golf Fundraiser Slated for May 16

The Westerville Education Foundation (WEF) will be holding its seventh annual Mini-Golf Fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Westerville Mini-Golf & Batting Cages, 450 W. Schrock Rd. www.westervilleeducationfoundation.com

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!

More than 210 individuals showed up at Westerville Central High School on Saturday morning, April 11, to participate in the Spring Dash 5K, hosted by the Fit Frosties of Robert Frost Elementary School.  Money raised from the event will go towards the installation of a paved walk/jog/bike path around the school grounds.  So far, more than $6,100 has been collected for the project through sponsorships and fundraisers like this race.

Westerville North High School Inducts Three into Alumni Hall of Fame

Westerville North High School inducted three alumni into its Hall of Fame at a luncheon and ceremony held April 10 – Lori Gill Grennan, Gary Hoffman and Ron Thomas.  The school’s Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee selected those honored from a pool of applicants who graduated at least 10 years ago, have demonstrated success in their career, and have made significant contributions to their community.

Rotary Club of Westerville Names April Students of the Month

The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, April 9.  April students are: Kwaku Ayesu, Westerville North High School; and Melissa Rideout, Westerville South High School.

Genoa Middle School Launches “It Takes Courage” Campaign Next Week

Keeping the school climate strong and addressing issues that impact all students are priorities at Genoa Middle School where, next week, a campaign called “It Takes Courage” will be launched.  The spirit week will promote acts of courage, standing up against stereotypes and bullying, and promoting kindness and acceptance.  The event is being orchestrated by Stephanie Christie, who runs the “Thank Goodness I’m Female” and “Girl Action League” programs at the school.  She is also the Development and Programs Specialist for Youth to Youth International.

Academic Enrichment Center’s Sue Bell Receives Rotary Sunrise Service to Youth Award

Sue Bell, administrative assistant at the Westerville City Schools Academic Enrichment Center (AEC), was surprised on April 8 when a group of Sunrise Rotarians showed up to present her with the Diane J. Conley Rotary Club of Westerville Sunrise Service to Youth award.  She received a plaque from the club, along with a cake and a gift card donated by the Walmart Supercenter on Schrock Road.  In addition, an American flag will be flown in her honor during Westerville’s Field of Heroes display.

Third Grade Hawthorne Students Publish Mighty Mustangs Historical Perspective

Twenty-four third grade children hailing from 15 different countries combined their talents, under the direction of teacher Kate Mantenieks and retired Ohio University Professor Dorothy Leal, to write Mighty Mustangs:  The History of Hawthorne Elementary.  The paperback is available for $7.99 on Amazon.

Genoa Middle School Students Advance to National History Day Statewide Competition

Genoa Middle School students participated in District 6 History Day Competition on March 28 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.  Research and projects were created following the theme “Leadership and Legacy.”

American Legion Post 171 Selects High School Delegates for Buckeye Boys/Girls State

Westerville American Legion Post 171 has sent hundreds of boys and girls to the annual experiment in democracy, called Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State.  “Post 171 sends more boys (10) and girls (12) to this program than any other American Legion post in Ohio,” remarked Bev Etling, chairperson of the program for the last seven years.  The program especially appeals to Westerville students because of the enthusiasm of the teacher and advisors.
