Westerville’s Performance Remains Strong on Redesigned State Report Card

The Westerville City School District’s latest state report card indicates that students once again attained high levels of academic achievement during the 2013-2014 school year, but also revealed areas that need evaluation and improvement.

Board President Praises School Staff for Choosing to Serve

Westerville City Schools Board President Dr. Nancy Nestor-Baker, a champion of public education, spoke to classified employees on Friday, September 12, a Professional Development Day in the district.  She said Westerville Schools has seen a lot of changes in the past few decades, including a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged children and radical growth in the English as a Second Language population.  She said she is proud of the way the district has responded with compassion and adapted to the changing needs of its student body.

Ema Rennie to Receive Ohio’s Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award

Ema Rennie has been notified by the Ohio Association for Gifted Children (OAGC) that she will receive the Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award.  It will be presented on October 13 at an OAGC conference to be held at the Hilton-Easton in Columbus. Rennie was a student at Heritage Middle School last year when she was nominated by her teacher, Debbie Pellington.

Mid-States Band Association Invitational Scheduled for Westerville North on October 4

The event begins at 12:45 p.m. and should end by 8:30 p.m. Westerville North and South, plus four other high school marching bands, will perform their halftime shows.  South is scheduled to play at 4:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m.  North will perform at 7:15 p.m.  The public is invited to attend and vote for their favorite band.

Mason Woods Remembered During “Tackling Childhood Cancer” event at Central

The event was coordinated by freshman team parents along with Eddie and Andrea Woods in memory of their son, Mason Woods, who was a third grade student at Fouse Elementary School when he passed away on February 3, 2009, after a six-year battle with leukemia.

Bette Marschall Grant Applications Due by October 15

Applications for monetary grants from The Bette Marschall Education Fund of The Columbus Foundation are being accepted for worthy 2014-2015 school-year projects not otherwise supported within the school budget.  The grants are available to teachers, students, administrators, and non-teaching staff within the Westerville City School District.  The submission deadline is October 15, 2014.

Emerson Students Celebrate International Dot Day on September 15

Emerson Elementary School students celebrated International Dot Day on September 15, when Dr. Jan Fedorenko, Westerville City Schools Curriculum Integration Specialist, visited the school to read aloud The Dot, by best-selling author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds.

WPE and Kiwanis bring Birthday Book Bonanza! Program to Early Learning Center

Volunteers from Westerville Partners for Education (WPE) and Kiwanis of Westerville brought a very special birthday Book Bonanza! program to the Early Learning Center (ELC) on Tuesday, September 16.  Teachers chose a book from the Book Bonanza! collection for each student who had celebrated a birthday over the summer months.  WPE supplied enough books to ensure that all preschoolers will receive a book to commemorate their birthdays this year.

Fab Lab is Coming to Westerville Middle Schools

Ohio, including Westerville, as they introduce laser cutters, 3-D printing and new technology to students through mobile Fab Labs.  For the first time, students will be working “on wheels” using sophisticated machines, building robots and creating designs and programs in the new MIT Mobile Fab Labs as part of the new Innovation Generation education and workforce initiative.

Westerville Schools Ranked 18th Best in Nation by Movoto

Movoto Real Estate, a national online real estate brokerage, recently released its findings, after collecting data for 109 different suburbs using sources including the U.S. Census American Community Survey and GreatSchools.org.  They considered student/teacher ratio; money spent per year per student; high school graduation rate; and the GreatSchools.org rating (based on test scores for the area).
