Westerville South Key Club Sponsors Memorable Soccer Night for Special Olympians

The Westerville South High School Key Club sponsored a fun night of soccer on October 7 for Westerville Special Olympic athletes, who got to play in South’s stadium under the lights.  Key Club members rented the stadium, provided referees and announcers, ran the scoreboard, and even made sure cheerleaders were on hand to stir up enthusiasm.

Emerson Pays it Forward by Donating 675 Books to WPE’s Book Bonanza

During the week of October 6, Emerson Magnet School held a not-so-ordinary Scholastic Book Fair.  Students and staff were inspired by a recent visit from Westerville Partners for Education representatives, who, through their Book Bonanza! program, provided each third grade student with a book to take home and keep.

Forget Waldo, Where’s Mr. Uher?

Alcott Elementary School’s Student Council wanted to come up with a project to promote unity and they also wanted to introduce everyone to their new principal, Joseph Uher.  So, the “Where’s Mr. Uher?” board was created.

Successful Junior Mentoring Program Benefits All

Transitioning from middle to high school creates apprehension for most students, but that uneasiness has been diminished thanks to the Westerville City School District’s Junior Mentoring Program.  Juniors from each Westerville high school visit with eighth grade students at all four middle schools to build relationships and answer questions.  The eleventh graders become role models for the eighth graders, who often grow up to become Junior Mentors themselves.

Westerville Parent Council Report Shows Volunteer Efforts Continue to Grow

Westerville City Schools gain the equivalent of nearly 67 full-time employees and hundreds of thousands of dollars toward student enrichment from parent and community support groups in the school district, according to a report released this week from Westerville Parent Council.

Genoa Staff Tailgates in Support of Athletic Teams

Drizzle and chilly temperatures didn’t stop Genoa Middle School employees from participating in the first annual Staff Tailgate, which was held on the blacktop outside of the Commons after school on Thursday, October 9.

Westerville Schools Have Two National Achievement Semifinalists

More than 1,600 Black American high school seniors have been designated by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) officials as Semifinalists in the 51st annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. Included on the list are Kara E. Johnson, a student at Westerville Central High School; and Olamide Bola, a pupil at Westerville North.

Families Pack Whittier for Annual Fall Festival

Families came out in droves to pack Whittier Elementary School on Friday evening, October 10, for the annual Fall Festival.  The popular event, sponsored by the PTA, featured food and fun.  High school students and parent volunteers manned a number of games, which were played in the gymnasium, where attendees could also have their fingernails and face painted and their hair sprayed with bright colors.

Commended Students Named in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program

Twelve pupils in the Westerville City School District have been named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.  They are:  Rachel Rios, Westerville Central High School; Bradley Davis, Tony Du, Jack Engelhart and Jacob Waldruff, Westerville North; and Sage Conger, Joshua Himes, Sarah Leonard, Nicholas Ruyack, Andrew Siedlak, Micah Thomas, and Nicholas Vermaaten, Westerville South.
