Alcott Students Form History Club

Third grade students Caden Edmunds and Zach Dieter meet with Alcott Principal Joseph Uher to discuss ideas for their new History Club.

                                                                                                                     

Third grade Alcott Elementary School students Caden Edmunds and Zach Dieter just can’t get enough history.  They like the subject so much, in fact, that they recently approached Principal Joseph Uher with the idea of forming an Alcott History Club.  With the assistance of Mr. Uher and some parent volunteers, the duo created an agenda of topics and a schedule to follow during the meetings.  Seventeen students signed up to meet weekly for the purpose of researching and discussing topics including Roman History, the Civil War, World War II, the American Presidency and September 11.  The club will meet the first Tuesday of each month until the end of the school year.

Westerville Middle School Students Place at State Future City Competition

Students from Blendon, Heritage and Walnut Springs Middle Schools in Westerville represented Westerville City Schools in the Ohio Future City Competition held January 17 at Columbus State Community College.  Heritage Middle School took fourth place at the 2014 contest.

COSI Brings “Current Conditions” Program to Hanby

The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) brought its traveling program, “Current Conditions” to Hanby Magnet School on Wednesday, January 21.  The day began with an interactive assembly introducing the students to air pressure, cloud formation, warm and cold fronts, and extreme weather.

Parent Presentations Inspire Emerson Students

Pupils in Mara Clark’s third grade class at Emerson Magnet School got a special treat on Tuesday, January 20, when they enjoyed the first in a series of Parent Presentations, which give family members a chance to share their careers, passions and hobbies with the class.

Westerville North’s Kennedy Boswell Wins Otterbein’s Martin Luther King Contest

Westerville North High School sophomore Kennedy Boswell was named a winner in Otterbein University’s fourth annual Martin Luther King Multimedia, Essay and Arts Contest.  The annual competition allows high school students to showcase their talents through art, essays, poetry or multimedia submissions.

Genoa Students Write Over One Million Words during National Novel Writing Month

Genoa Middle School’s sixth graders were extremely busy during the month of November, creating their own novels for NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month).  Collectively, they wrote 1,211,471 words!  All students who met their goal have received a code from CreateSpace, an online publishing site, to get their books published and receive five free copies.

Harlem Wizards Entertain Westerville Students

The “slamtastic” Harlem Wizards performed at Westerville Central High School on Tuesday evening, January 20, when they were pitted against teachers and community members making up a team called the Westerville Wonders.  Prior to the game, the Wizards announced that “Never in the history of sport will the losing team have so much fun.”

Genoa Eight Graders Learn Practical Lessons during JA Day

On Friday morning, January 16, eighth grade students at Genoa Middle School participated in the annual Junior Achievement (JA) Day, sponsored by Alliance Data.  Pupils learned about careers, budgeting, credit and insurance, thanks to volunteers from Alliance Data, who engaged them in discussions, instruction, reflective writing, mathematical calculations, and instructional board games.

Westerville Students Excel in WordMasters Challenge; One Achieves Perfect Score

A student representing Westerville City Schools recently received a perfect score in the first of three meets for this year’s WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually.
