Friends, family members, staff and coaches gathered in the Atrium at Westerville North High School on Wednesday, May 11, to watch and celebrate as three student athletes signed Letters of Intent to continue competing at the collegiate level.  Brandon Goldsmith will wrestle at Baldwin Wallace; Quinn Nicodemus will play Lacrosse at Sierra Nevada College; and Alex Stefanelli will play baseball at Hope College.

“El Toro Loco (The Crazy Bull)” was the name of this year’s Spanish-themed first grade restaurant, run by students in Jim Ledford’s class at Alcott Elementary School.  The pupils have been working on learning Spanish words and sentences all year, and this marked the culminating activity.  Children filled all the jobs in the restaurant, including host/hostess, waiter/waitress, busser, manager, and cashier.

The new Girls on the Run group at Hawthorne Elementary School concluded its first season on May 18 with a community impact project – thanking the Minerva Park Police Department for supporting the school community. Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for females in grades 3-8. The 10-week curriculum incorporates lessons that empower girls, who also train for a 5k run.

The 10th annual Elementary Leadership Summit occurred on Friday, May 13, at Westerville North High School.  More than 140 third, fourth and fifth grade students from all Westerville elementary schools were in attendance.  Participants completed leadership and team building exercises, and shared the outcomes of their building community service projects.

On Saturday, May 7, Westland High School in Galloway, Ohio, was the site of the state finals for school bus drivers and the driver skills Road-E-O.  Drivers from across the state competed at the regional level on April 23, and winners advancing to the state contest.  Representing Westerville City Schools were Kurt Blaser and Gary Case.

Westerville City Schools Announces Summer Food Service Program

Westerville City Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program.  Meals will be provided to all eligible children free of charge.  (To be eligible to receive free meals at a residential or nonresidential camp, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program.)

2016 Central Ohio Invention Convention Winners Moving on to National Competition

Following the Regional Invention Convention Competition held at Tolles Career and Technical Center on May 7, a number of Westerville City Schools students have advanced to the national contest.

On May 18, each Westerville middle school sent their building Chess Club champion to participate in the Middle School Chess Tournament, hosted by Blendon Middle School.  Families, friends, and staff eagerly watched the round-robin matches.

The Bette Marschall Memorial Education Fund of The Columbus Foundation has announced the recipients of 10 grant awards totaling $3,082 to Westerville City Schools personnel for applications submitted this spring.

Westerville Commencement Ceremonies will Take Place on May 28

Commencement exercises for Westerville’s graduating class of 2016 will take place on Saturday, May 28, at the Ohio Expo/Celeste Center. Westerville Central High School ceremonies will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by Westerville South High School at 2:00 p.m. and Westerville North High School at 6:00 p.m.
