Who is Dr. Hartnell?

Someone once asked New York Yankees' center fielder Joe DiMaggio why he was always diving for the ball and trying his hardest during every game. His response remains, to this day, the creed by which Dr. Hartnell teaches: "There is always some kid who may be seeing me for the first or last time, [and] I owe him my best."

Born in Lansing, Michigan on October 1, 1977, Dr. Hartnell lived his first six months in Holt, Michigan before moving to Westerville, Ohio in 1978.

Dr. Hartnell attended both Robert Frost and Mark Twain Elementary Schools, Walnut Springs Middle School, and Westerville North High School (where he graduated in 1996).

He went to Michigan State University, becoming the fourth generation in his family to do so. He earned a B.A. Degree in History with a Minor in Geography in 2000. He was awarded his Teacher Certification in Secondary Education in 2001, and as part of the program at MSU, Dr. Hartnell taught history for the 2000-2001 school year at Holt High School in Michigan. Ironically, if he had grown up in Holt instead of moving to Westerville, this is the same school he would have attended. (Even stranger, Dr. Hartnell's "mentor teacher" at Holt had both of his cousins in class.)

Dr. Hartnell returned to Westerville in 2001 and taught at both Westerville North and Walnut Springs. He was hired full time at Westerville North the next year. The 2012-2013 school year marks Dr. Hartnell's 12th year teaching in Westerville. He received "Teacher of the Year" honors for the 2006-2007 school year, an award bestowed upon a teacher only once in their career. In 2009, he was inducted into the Westerville North High School Alumni Hall of Fame.

In 2003, he married his high school sweetheart Molly in a perfect ceremony in Columbus that included... you guessed it... Michigan State's mascot "Sparty". In 2010, Dr. Hartnell and his wife celebrated the birth of their son, Fraser McKim.

In 2005, Dr. Hartnell completed his Masters in the Art of Teaching (M.A.T.) in the areas of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment through Marygrove College. Dr. Hartnell attended Walden University (based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota) from January 2008 through April 2011, where he earned his doctorate in Teacher/Educational Leadership, or what is commonly referred to as an "Ed.D.", or Educational Doctorate. In short, Dr. Hartnell is a "Doctor of Education". For a look at his doctoral study, please visit http://gradworks.umi.com/34/43/3443953.html

Dr. Hartnell loves basketball and coached for four years at Walnut Springs, where his tactics... and antics... earned him the nickname of "The Bobby Knight of Middle School Basketball" (for better or worse). During the 2004-2005 campaign, he became the first coach in school history to lead the 8th grade to victories over all three Westerville rivals (Heritage, Genoa, and Blendon) in the same season.

Dr. Hartnell is in the process of publishing his course textbook, Nutty the A.D.D. Squirrel's Scramblin' Thru History.
