Westerville North High School seniors Allison Fugger and Avery Pierson were honored on March 13 with the James McCann Excellence in Journalism Award.  Sponsored by the Ohio Capital Conference Academic League, the awards recognize students who excel in scholastic journalism.

Fugger and Pierson are co-editors-in-chief of Westerville North’s student newspaper, The Odyssey.  The pair oversee the print edition of the paper, as well as a digital edition, podcasts and a Twitter account dedicated to serving the Westerville community.

A sample of the students’ journalism work is published in a bound volume.  This year’s keynote speaker was former North principal James McCann, for whom the award is named.  A reception for the students, parents, their publication advisers, and school administrators followed.

Fugger is a valued varsity member of the school’s academic challenge team, In The Know.  She also participates in cross country and National Honor Society.  Her work ethic was described as inspirational to other students; her writing both thoughtful and thought-provoking.  Fugger will attend Miami University (in Oxford, Ohio) in the fall, where she will major in finance and minor in business.

Pierson is a varsity member of the track and field team, and is also a four-year football cheerleader.  She leads by example and her stories were said to be sophisticated in content and scope as she tackles difficult topics with a mature eye for detail.  Pierson will attend The Ohio State University as part of OSU’s Scholar Program, where she plans to major in business and minor in political science.
