Heat-Illness Information and Resources
As summer programs begin and pre-season approaches, coaches, parents, and athletes
should be reminded to stay properly hydrated. This means drinking when you may not feel
thirsty and avoiding carbonated or sugar-laden beverages! Heat illnesses can be life
threatening. Be aware and be prepared. Be familiar with the “Heat Illnesses: Signs,
Symptoms, & What to Do” chart and be sure to follow the advice of your athletic trainers
and team physicians about exercising in the heat and humidity.

Good Hygiene Is Key to Staying Healthy
-Personal hygiene is the key in the prevention of staph infections.
-Thorough cleansing before and after workouts and contact with other players is your
primary defense.
-Utilize alcohol-based hand sanitizers during workouts and games.
-Launder your uniforms and other athletic clothing in hot water and dry them with a hot
dryer after EACH use.
-Athletic equipment should be thoroughly sanitized after use to avoid transmission of
bacteria on surfaces.
-If an athlete has an open wound, be sure to clean it well, and keep it covered with a
bandage that attaches to the skin on all sides. Refer all wounds to the Athletic Training
staff.
-Do not ever share or borrow towels, razors, soap, or any other personal items.
