When Westerville South High School English teacher Sarah Detrick learned one of her students, Zoe Gerhing, couldn’t make the graduation ceremony on Saturday at the Celeste Center, she brought commencement to her.

Detrick set Gerhing up with her cap and gown and invited teachers, staff members and Principal Mike Hinze to join the quiet celebration, which they set up during Gerhing's study hall on Wednesday. As part of the festivities, teachers shared praise for Gerhing and Twinkle, the school's Canine Companion service dog, presented her with a card instead of a diploma.

"I wanted to make sure she was celebrated and to know how much we’re proud of her," Detrick said.
