Questions regarding commencements should be directed to individual high schools.
Graduating Class of 2020 Commencement Activities
Westerville City School District high school principals and members of the district's leadership team have developed a three-part, daylong celebration on May 23 to honor and recognize our graduating classes this year:
- Each school will release a commemorative Virtual Graduation Video for graduates and their families to view the morning of May 23.
- Graduates and their families also will participate in a “drive-through” ceremony at their school to receive their diploma. Plans for this ceremony, which have been reviewed and approved by the county health department, are being communicated directly to families by your school.
- The third and final component of the day is the community-wide activity called “Light the Path for the Class of 2020." The Westerville City School District is inviting the entire community to join together in a display of support for our graduates on what would have been the date of their traditional graduation ceremony. Details follow.
Light the Path for the Class of 2020
Anyone interested in joining the "Light the Path for the Class of 2020" activity may do so from their home, their place of business, or just about anywhere. Graduating seniors received a ribbon in one of their school colors, as well as a congratulatory sign, during cap and gown pickup. These items are to be displayed at your home.
Community members are being encouraged to tie a white ribbon around a tree or support post on the porch of their home and leave it displayed through Sunday, May 24. Businesses are also being encouraged to display white ribbons as a show of support for our graduates. Then, at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time) on May 23, graduates, their families, and others helping to "Light the Path" should display an electric candle in their home’s window(s) and/or stand in their front yard to hold a lighted candle from 8:20 p.m. until 8:40 p.m. At this same time, the district will light the stadiums at each high school for 20 minutes in recognition of this year’s graduates.
Please continue to watch for important information about these activities and please direct any questions to your school. Congratulations once again to the members of our Class of 2020!
