Career Day

Career Day has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 9th!  6th and 7th graders will listen to speakers from the community here at Walnut.  8th graders who are not going to Washington DC will participate in Shadow Day with a person and a career of their choice.  Information and permission forms were passed out during seminar on Friday, April 13th and extras can be found in the organizer outside of the office.  The orange paper should be turned into 8th grade seminar teachers before Friday, April 27th.  See Mrs. Harris or Mr. Markle with questions or concerns.    

 

Do you have a family member or a friend who has an interesting job?  Please invite them to be a speaker for Career Day 2018!   Have them call or email Mrs. Harris before Friday, April 27th.   

 

Washington DC Trip

Attention all students going on the Washington D.C. trip: The research project for the trip is due to Mrs. Emrich by Friday, April 20th.  All prescription medications need to be dropped off to Mrs. Troutman by April 20th also.  The final mandatory meeting for the trip will be Wednesday, April 25th at 6:30pm.

 PTSA will be having another courtyard and entrance clean up this Friday (20th) after school.  We welcome any helpers!

 

Scheduling

Attention 6th and 7th grade students and seminar teachers:

 

It's time to begin thinking about scheduling for next year!  Scheduling information will be distributed in seminar classes today and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday April 19 and 20).  

 

Please be sure this information goes home ASAP.  Please also talk with your family and your teachers about your scheduling choices because there are some changes this year.  

Extra copies are available in the organizer outside of the office.  Forms are due to SEMINAR teachers by Wednesday, April 25th.  Please see your grade level counselor with questions or concerns.  

 

Lost/Found

Attention all students: Make sure you check lost/found box today for all items you may have lost or missing. At the end of today they will be donated.

By Thursday of each week you should remember to do this in case you are missing anything at all.

 

Student Council

May 1-4 student council is having a Spirit Week! Bring one dollar to wear a hat, your pj’s, wacky clothes and to dress up like your favorite generation. All money goes to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society for cancer research. The grade level that raises  $275 or higher, gets an outdoor combined lunch with music!

J-Pop

Our next meeting will be tomorrow, Friday, April 20th, from 3 until 4 pm. We will be continuing our annual film festival with The Secret World of Arrietty. Please make sure your rides are here no later than 4 pm. Arigato!

 

SPORTS

Track

Congratulations to all the Boy Track Athletes who ran against Gahanna South on Wednesday and took a commanding lead and win over the Gahanna Lions on Wednesday.  

 

The Wolves Swept many events and won with a final score of 70 to 43-

 

Scoring for the Wovles on Wednesday were: Gordon, Chapman, Solosa, Johnson, Ingram, Mueller, Schrenberger, Ebbrecht, Madden, Gray, Hamblin, Lang, Fett, Wickham, Scurlock and Holzaepfel.

 

Another Congratulations goes out to the Track Athletes who ran in the frigid temps last night at Gahanna Lincoln High School for the Relay Invitaitonals!  

 

Placing and Medaling for the Boys were Gordon in the Hurdles taking 2nd.  Bagby, Holzaepfel, and Lang in the Discus taking 3rd, and Ahmed, Fett, Ingram and Cook taking 3rd in the 7th Grade 4x100.

If you are planning to try out for cheerleading for next school year, please turn your paperwork in to Miss Demas by this Tuesday, April 24th. Clinics will be this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with a final tryout on Friday, April 27th. Please see Miss Demas if you have questions.

Art Show

Congratulations to the following students who have their artwork hanging in the community center for the Westerville District Art Show.

Allison H., Luke G., Hannah B., Caeden G., Mylae S., Zion O., Quincy T., Tyler O., Jackson K., Sarah D., Jessica R., Kate C., Abigail R., Nhi T., Alex W., and Sarah B.

Student artwork was chosen from all of the middle and high schools for the show. The artwork will be on display through the end of  April with a reception for the artists and their families on Sunday, April 29.

There will be an information meeting on Monday, April 16th at 6:00 pm in the media center at Central for anyone that is interested in trying out for Cheerleading at Westerville Central. There will be a pre tryout meeting for 8th grade students interested in trying out for cheer at Westerville North High School. The meeting is on Monday, April 16th, at 6:30 PM in the auditorium at Westerville North High School. 

 

 

Lacrosse

Lacrosse Club will, unfortunately, be cancelled again today.  The grass is waaaaay too wet and the weather forecast is calling for snow and 38 degrees at 10 am today.   If the weather is nice this coming Friday, maybe we'll try to go outside then.

 

Don't forget, if you need a book during testing, you can log into Destiny using your Google student ID and password.  Mrs. Trimble will bring your book to you!

Career Day has been rescheduled and expanded!  On Wednesday, May 9th, students will have fun career education choices.  

 

6th and 7th graders will participate in career day with speakers from the community who will visit us here at school.  Students will choose the presentations they attend at the end of the month.  

 

8th graders who are not going to Washington DC will have the opportunity to participate in a job shadow instead of reporting to school.  Details will be given out during seminar today.  (8th grade seminar teachers, permission forms are in your mailboxes.)

Those who are trying out must attend all four days of tryouts to learn the cheer, chant and dance and submit all necessary paperwork to Ms. Demas by Tuesday, April 24th  in orderto be considered for a spot. Tryout applications and medical forms can be found in the organizer across from the office or from Ms. Demas in room 215. Make sure to get an updated physical before tryouts. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Demas.

Lacrosse

Congratulations to the boys lacrosse Wolves who won their last 2 games - beating New Concord 11-0 and Olentangy Orange 8-3! 

Scoring for the Wolves were Anthony C., Jack B., Mekhi K., Philip S., and Aiden M. 

Great defensive plays causing numerous turnovers and allowing only 3 goals in total came from Donnie Y., Jack H., Jack L., Caine R., and  Hayden A. In goal for the shut out was Julien R.

 

This Saturday, the Wolves will play in the "Rule the Ville" tournament at Westerville South. Come out and cheer them on to victory!

CFI

Due to small group testing taking place in the CFI, the CFI will be closed today.  Remember, during testing, Mrs. Trimble and Mrs. Doel will deliver your books to you.  All you have to do is log into the library catalog and place a reserve.  If you don't know how to do that, a short instructional video can be found on the morning announcements located on the Walnut Springs Schoology page.  Get there by clicking the drop down arrow beside your name and then click on Walnut Springs.

 

Wolfpack Press

Wolfpack Press will meet April 11 from 2:45-3:30.

Westerville South Cheerleading

Attention ALL 8th grade students that will be attending Westerville South and are interested in Wildcat Cheerleading! There is a parent informational meeting regarding tryouts and the upcoming season on Wednesday, April 11 at 6:30pm in the Westerville South Media Center. All interested cheerleaders and parents of cheerleaders are encouraged to attend as Coaches will be discussing the overall program and tryout information. 7th Grade Softball
Last night, your 7th grade Lady Wolves welcomed Canal Winchester for our home opener.  The Wolves had good offense with hits from Macie, Lauryn, Yannyelis, and Marvet.  Natalie and Kim each had two hit games and Livia had a single scoring Lauryn.  Natalie had a great night on the mound, with Marvet stepping up on second, Lauryn on short, Macie on first and Yannyelis on third.  The Wolves travel to Canal tomorrow for a rematch, wish them luck as we bring home our first win.

Students who checked out library books before Spring Break need to return those books by the end of the day.  There are A LOT of library books currently overdue - SOME FROM 2017!!.  With the end of the school year fast-approaching, we need to get those library books returned to the CFI.  Starting next week, students with overdue library books will NOT be able to enjoy the benefits of the CFI including using the makerspace, the TV Studio OR getting chromebooks.  So, be sure to turn in all of your overdue library books THIS WEEK!

Walnut Springs Cheerleading

Calling all 6th and 7th graders who are interested in trying out for cheerleading for next school year.

Walnut Springs Cheerleading clinics will be held from Tuesday, April 24th to  Thursday, April 26th from 3-5 p.m. with a final tryout on Friday, April 27th in the gym. Those who are trying out must attend all four days of tryouts to learn the cheer, chant and dance and submit all necessary paperwork to Miss Demas by Tuesday, April 24th in order to be considered for a spot. Tryout applications and medical forms can be found in the organizer outside of the office or from Miss Demas in room 215. Make sure to get an updated physical before tryouts. Congratulations to our Walnut Springs Science Olympiad team! Over the weekend our team competed against 15 other middle schools around Columbus, at Grandview Heights. Please help me in congratulating some of our winners in our competition. For the event Solar System, Bryan R. earned 5th place, in the event Towers Colleen L. and AJ A. placed 5th and in the event Write it Do it Ava S. and Olivia C. placed 6th. Way to go team! Also a reminder we will be having our pizza party this Thursday, March 22nd from 3-4pm, to celebrate and brain storm for next year.

 

GEM Award

The winner of the 2017-2018 Walnut Springs’ GEM Award is Mr. Donte Martin!  Mr. Martin received three nominations. He was nominated by Ms. Trueman, Christian H., and Andrew B.  Mr. Martin has been recognized for being a positive influence on the students, staff, parents, and overall environment of Walnut Springs this year.  Please congratulate Mr. Martin when you have the chance!

Wrestling

Another weekend down and another opportunity for one of our outstanding Wolves Wrestlers to excel. This time, we want to send a very special shout out to Connor “Gator" E. who traveled 2 and half hours north to compete in the OAC Junior High States Tournament in Youngstown. Gator wrestled a grueling 9 matches between the two days. He fought back against a tougher bracket than most and finished the two day tournament with 7 wins and 2 losses. He placed 7th overall in his weight class. When you see him in the halls, you may address him as “The 7th best 132 lb wrestler in the entire STATE of Ohio!” We could not be more proud to see that Walnut Springs Wolves Wrestling Team t-shirt on the podium. Great job Gator and good luck to all of the Wolves wrestlers who are still working their hardest in these, post-season, tournaments.

Yesterday's chess tournament was a success with 54 participants! Congratulations to Grant S., a 7th grader, who held on to his title as the building winner. He will represent Walnut Springs Middle School on May 8th at the Annual District Middle School Chess Tournament taking place in our CFI Classroom.

NJHS

There is a mandatory National Junior Honor Society Inductee meeting at the beginning of period 7/8 (7th grade first lunch) on Wednesday, March 14th. Please report to rm. 219 at the beginning of period 7/8. 

 

Gem Award

On behalf of the Walnut Springs GEM Committee, we would like to congratulate the following members of our community for being nominated for this years GEM award:

National History Day

Congratulations to all the National History Day District Participants.  Elise L., Jayci K., Katherine Z., Wyatt P., Ryan C., Josie G., Mabel C-V., Jane G., and Miles F. spent much of their Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University competing at the 2018 Ohio History Day District competition!  Special Congratulations to Wyatt P., who will be heading to the State Level Competition!

Spread the Word to End the Word

Next Wednesday, March 7, is the national day to Spread the Word to End the Word. What word is that? The word retard or retarded, otherwise known as the R-word. The 8th grade boys mentorship group Boys To Mentors will be posting pledge sheets to sign in the cafeteria as well as silk-screening t-shirts for staff members. More information on that will be posted in the teacher's lounge. Remember, Spread the Word to End the Word!

 

Talent Show

It was a great week of auditions for the Talent Show! Please remember that all performers must turn in their signed permission slips to the office by next Monday, March 5th.

 

Also mark your calendars for Friday, March 23rd to see all your talented classmates perform. The show will begin at 6:00 pm at Westerville North High School's Auditorium. Admission is free.

 

Geography Bee

Congratulations to 6th grader Aiden Montgomery who has qualified to compete in the state level competition of the National Geographic Bee!  Aiden will compete with 100 other middle schoolers on Friday April 6th for a chance to qualify for the National Geographic Bee and that $25,000 College Scholarship!

Ski Clubbers - Snow Trails is planning to be open this weekend and you can use your Ski pass every day until they close.  If you need your pass from Mr. Holmes, please go see him in room 354 for you Snow Trails Pass.
